10. Explore surfaces and materials
Lighting design often focuses solely on the light falling on a surface, rather than the brightness of the surface itself.
We only see light when it interacts with material. Light Architecture depends on this interaction, making the understanding of how materials absorb and reflect light crucial to successful design.
The way light interacts with materials and their finishes determines luminosity and contrast. Whether a material is polished, semi-reflective, or matt changes how it reflects light and therefore how it is perceived. Material colour also influences how much light is reflected or absorbed. Some materials can even act as passive light sources, reflecting light without consuming energy or needing electrical systems.......
