13. Consider the source
We often overlook the nature of the light source itself.
Light isn’t always direct; it is often reflected off surfaces. In nature, we see stars like the sun as direct light sources. The moon is a source of reflected sunlight and earthlight.
In addition to lamps providing direct light, Light Architecture considers surfaces as sources of illumination. Materials and the way they are finished, affects the brightness and character of a space, as materials either reflect, transmit, or absorb light. A good lighting design should first consider passive lighting from surfaces—treating walls, ceilings, columns, or other architectural elements as ‘light sources.’......
