Lighting systems are often disposed of before the end of their lifespan because they lack the ability to adapt to the user’s changing needs, while over-specification of equipment can lead to waste. 

Flexibility is key to promoting a circular economy. A lighting system that can be easily adapted to meet evolving needs helps reduce waste. However, over-specifying unnecessary equipment that may never be used contributes creates redundancy, increasing both embodied and operational carbon.
