15. Optimise optical control
Luminaires should be thought of as optical instruments, not just light fixtures.
Light sources and luminaires are the building blocks of Light Architecture, not only meeting the requirements for visual function but also allowing magical atmospheres to be created.
Each light fitting has a distinct optical character, often shaped by reflectors, lenses, diffusers, or refractors, which control how the light is distributed. The more precise the optical design, the more efficiently the light can be delivered. Good optical design also minimises unwanted light spill and glare. Some luminaires offer adjustable features like beam direction, width, or focus, but decisions about flexibility should be made early in the design process to avoid unnecessary complexity. Fixed light sources often work best in Light Architecture.......
