17. Design for the circular economy
The lighting industry has been slow to embrace the benefits of a circular economy.
According to CIBSE’s TM66 report, creating a circular economy in lighting involves considering the entire product life cycle, from cradle to cradle. This means designing to maximise resource efficiency, reduce waste and pollution, keep products in use, address resource scarcity, and regenerate natural systems. This is the essence of the circular economy.
As the global economic model shifts from linear to circular, the lighting industry must follow suit to reduce waste and improve environmental outcomes. Circularity should be a core principle of Light Architecture, requiring designers to work closely with industry, follow guidelines, and adapt how they specify lighting.......
